Prof. LAN, Karey Yu-Ju is a Research Chair Professor in the Department of Chinese as a Second Language, at National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), Taipei, Taiwan. Prof. Lan is currently the director of the Situated and Immersive TELL Laboratory. She is the founding president of the Taiwan Pedagogy and Practice in TELL Association. Prof. Lan’s research focuses on AI Chatbot enhanced language learning; technology-enhanced foreign language learning; language learning in virtual worlds; mobile learning, and online synchronous teacher training. Prof. Lan received her PhD and MA from National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), Taipei, Taiwan in 2006 and 1995 respectively. Before becoming a university professor, she taught in two different elementary schools in Taiwan for over 20 years (1986-2008). This experience has motivated her to develop different platforms to meet different language learners’ multiple needs. She worked as an adjunct assistant professor at National Taipei University of Education, and NTNU Taiwan from 2007 to 2009. Then, she became an assistant professor at NTNU in 2009 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2012. In 2015, she was promoted to Full Professor. In 2017, Prof. Lan was awarded the title of Distinguished Professor, which was awarded by NTNU to recognize the outstanding academic achievements of research scholars.     

In light of enhancing language ability and addressing the importance of promoting Chinese language teaching to increase Taiwan’s global competence, she has been devoted to applying the research outcomes in the field of Technology Enhanced Language Learning (TELL) to establish theories and to explore classroom practices since 2008. These outcomes are particularly significant in the use of 3D virtual contexts. Her significant contribution focus on the study in VR, including 1) verifying learning theories in terms of language learning strategies and learning outcomes in VR contexts through empirical research; 2) constructing a theoretical framework of using VR for language learning based on my 10 years’ research; 3) developing platforms and tools to support language learners aged 9 and above in constructing their 3D learning environments based on my theoretical framework and reflections; and 4) putting into practice and disseminating the outcomes for training and helping teachers solve potential problems in language classes.

So far, Prof Lan is the PI of nine external grants funded projects (total fund: 23,165,000 NTD). Prof. Lan has published more than 50 SSCI journal papers, two edited books, nine book chapters and over 80 refereed international conference papers. Prof. Lan is on the 2021 and 2020 Stanford University’s Top 2% scientists list; and the 2022 Stanford University’s Top 2% scientists list (both Career Impact and 2022). According to AD Scientific Index 2024, Prof. Lan is ranked #1 in the area of Linguistics and Literature, and #20 in the area of Social Science in Taiwan. On google scholar, the number of publications indexed mounts to H index =30 with i10 index=45 and total citations of 3243 (15 October 2023). For her outstanding research performance, she was awarded the Outstanding Research Award by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Taiwan, in 2022. The Award includes two categories: basic research and applied research, with a total of 80 candidates each year. Prof. Lan is the only winner of the Information and Computer Education Research in the basic research category in 2022.

Prof. Lan has been invited to give more than 20 keynote/feature/them-based/invited speeches and 50 talks held in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Sweden, South Korea, the USA, Australia, Mainland China, Japan, Malaysia, etc. She is the leading organizer of several international conferences and has been taking editorships for top levels journals. Prof. Lan is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Educational Technology & Society journal (JCR Q1, in Education), Associate Editor of Language Learning & Technology (JCR Q1 in Education), Consulting Editor of ETR&D (JCR Q1 in Education) and on the editorial board of ​Ampersand. Working with leading scholars in the fields, she has organized 7 sessions of special issues in SSCI top journals (i.e. LL&T, CALL, ET&S, ETR&D).
